He’s a Keeper: Comparing Eduoard Mendy and Mike Maignan

After already completing the signings of Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, as well as being close to signing Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz, Chelsea look likely to bring a new goalkeeper to Stamford Bridge, after it was reported by Fabrizio Romano that Kepa Arrizabalaga won’t ever feature as Chelsea goalkeeper again.

With the Blues spending big this summer, with the Kai Havertz deal set to be around the £80m mark, I think Chelsea will be looking to bring in a new goalkeeper at a slightly cheaper price.

That’s where these two come in. Senegalese keeper Eduoard Mendy of Stade Rennias and French keeper Mike Maignan of Lille. Both heavily feature in Ligue 1 for their team who have both had great seasons with Stade Rennias finishing 3rd and Lille finishing 4th in the french league table.

Now let’s compare their stats for the 2019/20 season. Mendy obtained 9 clean sheets in 24 starts last season, making 61 saves and conceding only 19 goals. Maignan made 28 starts, keeping 12 clean sheets and making 59 saves, although he did concede 27 goals.

Now when you analyse the two, they pretty much cancel each other out in terms of stats, one has a higher amount of clean sheets but the other has less goals conceded. What we can infer from this is that both of these keepers have a lot of potential to succeed at Chelsea!

Now I am going to assess their playing styles and what they will bring to this Chelsea team. For me Eduoard Mendy is the perfect fit. Standing at 6ft 6 inches tall, the Stade Rennais keeper is perfect when it comes to claiming crosses and patrolling the area, which is something Chelsea have really struggled with as of recent. His strengths are shot stopping and saving long shots which again has been an issue for Chelsea as seen in the games against Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Manchester City. According to WhoScored.com the Senegalese keeper has no known weaknesses which is very significant for a goalkeeper.

On the other hand, Mike Maignan stands at around 6ft 3in tall is very good at his concentration, shot stopping and close range shots coming in, but often struggles with his distribution and long passing. This could be a problem for Frank Lampards Chelsea team as he often seeks his keepers to either play it short around the back, or kick it long if a target man such as Olivier Giroud is on the pitch. It is not a major issue just one to bare in mind for Frank Lampard.

The age and transfer value may be the deciding factor in which keeper Chelsea chose to pursuit. Eduoard Mendy is currently 28 years old and is looking to cost the Blues north of £20m. However Mike Maignan is considerably younger at 25 years old, tho he is looking to set the blues back around £25m. As much as Mendy seems more suited to Chelsea’s play style, Maignan looks like the better deal.

Maignan also featured for Lille twice in the Champions League against Chelsea in the 2019/20 season, losing 2-1 both times with goals from Tammy Abraham in both matches, as well as efforts from Willian and Cesar Azpilicueta. In the first game between the two, the Frenchman produced a great save to deny Emerson, and multiple in the second half to deny Christian Pulisic and Willian before being taken off due to injury.

To conclude, both keepers would be a great addition to this Chelsea team, and it will be an interesting few weeks leading up to the start of the 2020/21 Premier League season to see who ends up becoming Chelsea’s No. 1!
