This weekend, many loan players were in action in some of Europe’s major leagues and the prestigious FA Cup, where millions of fans across the globe will be watching our loanee’s in action as they look to make an impact. It’s time for the Chelsea Loan Report 12-01-21.
Chelsea Loan Report 12-01-21 – FA Cup
In the World’s oldest competition, the FA Cup, we will start with Friday’s fixture for Crystal Palace where Michy Batshuayi started against Wolves where he, unfortunately, failed to make a serious impact on the game as Wolves won 1-0. However, Batshuayi played all 90 minutes, something he hasn’t managed all season with Crystal Palace, a small stepping stone for him.
Jamal Blackman had an excellent performance in goal for Rotherham as they narrowly missed out in extra time against Everton, as the Toffees won 2-1. Jamal Blackman has previously shined before against premier league sides, He faced Liverpool in the League Cup for Middlesbrough, only losing 14-13 on penalties, with the game ending 0-0, back in 2014.
Conor Gallagher played 60 minutes as he’s started for West Brom as they played former premier league side Blackpool. Unfortunately for him, Blackpool caused an upset and won 3-2 on penalties.
Besides the poor result, I think many Baggies fans would say Conor Gallagher has been their best player since the start of the season, he’s really grown into his role at the club and we all as Chelsea fans want to see him succeed at Chelsea.
There were two Chelsea loanees in action as Bristol Rovers took on Sheffield United hoping for their own giant killing. Luke McCormick started for Bristol Rovers and Ethan Ampadu started for Sheffield United as they look to win a game – something they haven’t achieved yet in the Premier League this season. McCormick played a full game coming up against fellow loanee Ethan Ampadu. Sheffield United came out victorious, maybe this could be the boost they need to get back and running in the premier league.
Jake Clarke-Salter played a full 90 minutes in defence as he continues to get some more game time at Birmingham City as they lost 3-0 to Manchester City, however, Clarke-Salter had a solid second half as Birmingham kept City out after being 3-0 at half time.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek got another 90 minutes under his belt, as Fulham comfortably got through to the next round winning 2-0 in a London derby against QPR.
Finally, Swansea were in action against Stevenage with Marc Guehi again in the heart of the backline making sure there wasn’t a cup upset for the Swans. They won 2-0 much to the frustration of fellow Chelsea loanee Jamie Cumming who was on the losing side between the sticks. Jamie has fully established himself as Stevenage’s No. 1 goalkeeper and we hope to see him getting better and better over the course of the season.
In league one, Accrington Stanley won 2-0 against Charlton Athletic. Nathan Baxter was between the sticks for Accrington, who has now kept three clean sheets in a row. Baxter took his time to find his feet at Stanley, up against the excellent Toby Savin, but he is currently No. 1 choice between the sticks.
Jon Russell and Tariq Uwakwe were unused substitutes for Accrington. Ian Maatsen was unfortunately on the losing side for Charlton, however, he’s had a great season in League One and we are excited to see his development continue as the season progresses.
Chelsea Loan Report 12-01-21 – Europe
Going across the channel to France, Trevoh Chalobah started another game for FC Lorient in Ligue 1 as his side lost 2-1 to Bordeaux, however, Chalobah is getting significant game time which is something we all want to see.
Staying in Europe and in Spain, Kenedy got a 25-minute cameo as Granada were thrashed 4-0 against Barcelona.
In Italy Davide Zappacosta was on the winning side for a change as Genoa beat Bologna 2-0, taking them out of the relegation zone to 17th. Tiemoué Bakayoko featured for Napoli and scored in the 90th minute to win the game as they beat Udinese 2-1.
Heading to Belgium and former Chelsea assistant Paul Clement is in charge of Cercle Brugge who lost 2-1 at home to KAS Eupen. Ike Ugbo played a full 90 minutes for Cercle. Staying in Belgium, Matthew Miazga featured and played the whole game in defence for Vincent Kompany’s Anderlecht side who lost 1-0 too.
