Gameweek 21: Chelsea Fantasy Premier League Preview

It’s Gameweek 21. What a difference a few days make. Thomas Tuchel is in charge. He’s managed one game. It wasn’t even a particularly intriguing watch. But, the German’s first match has thrown up countless talking points and moments of uncertainty, in a good way.

Nobody knows exactly how Chelsea will line up, what formation they might play and who is going to do what. This unpredictability is exciting for Blues fans but makes it hard for you budding Fantasy Premier League managers to hit the sweet spot.

I’ll be doing my best to travel forwards in time, see into Tuchel’s mind and let you all know what direction to go for Gameweek 21!

Experience over youth, again?

I dare not check over my Gameweek 20 guide. I’m not sure it would have been very helpful. Tuchel outfoxed us all and went with what he claimed to be an unfair team. It was experience over youth to get him through his first game in charge.

Now that the German will have had a few extra days of training, how will that impact his team selection? I don’t know!

This is going to be another lucky dip! In terms of who might score you points, Thiago Silva will probably start. Whether it is a back four or five against Burnley, the Brazilian is maybe the first name on the teamsheet for Tuchel.

He hasn’t had a bad FPL season either. He’s racked up an impressive 69 points for a second choice fantasy player. His price is good too, at 5.6m he is not only cheap for his points, he ranks outside the top 15 most expensive defenders.

With two cleansheets in three league games for Silva, even without Kurt Zouma he is bringing in a good amount of points. Including the 9 he bagged against Wolves.

Can he Mend-y it? Yes he can!

Chelsea may not have Bob the Builder as manager, but Thomas the Tank Engine is here! Mr Tuchel also looked very content to take away a cleansheet from Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Wolves. It may remind you of the way that Frank Lampard went about improving the Blue’s defence against Manchester United and Sevilla.

Although fans and players alike will be hoping for a better attacking display against Burnley, Chelsea and Tuchel might be hoping to build from the back first.

If this means ensuring more clean sheets then Edouard Mendy may once again become a viable FPL option.

The Senegalese keeper has seen his personal form dip since December. He has though found a way around that to pick up two cleansheets in three games alongside his defenders.

Interestingly enough, Chelsea’s Mendy has more combined points than Benjamin and Nampalys Mendy put together!

Mendy has fallen down the list of in form FPL keepers, finding himself selected by just 6.8% of managers, compared to Nick Pope who has the most points. The Englishman has 95 points whereas Mendy only has 65, Pope is also in 10.9% of teams.

If Chelsea are to build from the back then Mendy will thrive and so will your Fantasy points if you back him!

Gameweek 21: Pick of the week

Once again, this isn’t easy. With no guarantees on starters and question marks surrounding the system, there is simply no one pick above the rest!

So, here’s some more tips for the coming weeks until we have a more defined idea of what Tuchel’s Chelsea’s train might look like.

Thiago Silva will play, a lot.

If Chelsea are keeping cleansheets, Antonio Rudiger and Mendy might be decent options.

Steer clear of strikers until a favourite is picked.

There are very few guarantees right now. Keep an eye out for patterns of selection or play you think can aid your team!
