Chelsea vs Newcastle: Score Predictions (Premier League)

Chelsea vs Newcastle at Stamford Bridge is shaping up to be a hugely important game for both sides. On one hand, the Blues will be hoping to continue their recent resurgence and make their way back into the top 4. On the other, Newcastle know that a win against Chelsea will further distance themselves from the relegation zone. With wins against Sheffield United, Tottenham and Burnley respectively, the Tuchel train has gotten the Blues back to winning ways. The question is: will Chelsea remain on track for top 4, or, will the Magpies de-rail their good form and give Chelsea the Blues? Some of the writers at The Chelsea Social give their thoughts on how the Chelsea vs Newcastle match will unfold.

Introduction – Chelsea vs Newcastle

Last time these two teams met back in November it ended in a 2-0 win for the Blues at St James’ Park. On that day Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham combined superbly for Chelsea’s second goal which Blues fans will be hoping for a similar scenario this time around.

Since then, it’s been a topsy-turvy ride for Chelsea who went from being talked about as potential title challengers to having Lampard sacked, and then more recently, back in the top 4 picture. A classic roller coaster! Thomas Tuchel has been very good at unifying the playing group and getting them to quickly buy into his philosophy in a short amount of time. While still fine-tuning certain elements of their play, including the attack which seems a bit lost for answers at times, there’s no denying the Blues are looking rejuvenated and willing to back their new tactician as they hone in on a top 4 spot following Liverpool’s 3-1 loss to Leicester a couple of days ago.

While Chelsea have been finding their feet again under Tuchel, the visitors Newcastle have been having a difficult season although have had some signs of life over the past few weeks. In the past 5 games, while they have lost 3 times against Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Leeds United, they have also managed to secure 2 good wins against Everton and Southampton (with 10 men). In other words, while the Magpies haven’t been in scintillating form, they have shown some positive moments of late and as a result, Chelsea will need to be conscious of this, particularly given Newcastle will be keen on trying to distance themselves from the drop zone.

Pivoting back to the Blues, while they didn’t play their best game against Championship Barnsley during their 1-0 FA Cup Fifth Round victory, one of the main takeaways is that certain key stars (such as Mason Mount) were rested which is a positive heading into this clash against the Magpies. On the flip side, there were some underwhelming performances that would have given Tuchel something to ponder as he goes about making tactical and personnel plans for this match. Will be interesting to see how the German goes about selecting his lineup and formation for this all-important game.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at how the team sees the Chelsea vs Newcastle clash unfolding.

It’s Chelsea vs Newcastle and traditionally we like playing the Magpies at home. Unfortunately, this season and the word traditional have nothing in common! While I’m feeling happier these days based on our improved performances and results, I would be lying if I said I am 100% confident each time we play. The reason for my reservations are: 1) I’m not fully convinced about our makeshift defence, and, 2) Our attack still lacks some fluidity in breaking down the infamous ‘low block’ teams.

That said, we have been controlling games a lot better lately and there are signs that, beside the final ball/decision made, we are looking to be a team that is cohesive and strikes fear into our opponents. Perhaps this is the game to show the rest of the League that we have figured out that this final piece of the puzzle. Here’s hoping!

Chelsea are looking for their fifth win on the bounce under Tuchel, and, they will fancy their chances against an injury stricken Newcastle United side. There was plenty of rotation for the trip to Barnsley in the week, and a return to the midfield pivot of Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho is likely. Chelsea will see plenty of the ball as Newcastle look to frustrate the Blues. But I believe they’ll have enough to secure the win. 2-0.

Chelsea come into this match with full confidence having won four out of the five matches since Thomas Tuchel took over. We will be hoping to continue that against Newcastle. Providing all goes well, we could see ourselves into the Champions League places which would be very pleasing to see. The Blues come into this match as huge favourites but the Magpies will be a tough opponent to come up against. Steve Bruce’s side have the likes of Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin who could cause problems for the Chelsea defence. However, Newcastle will be without the injured Callum Wilson which is a huge blow. With a number of key first team players rested for the FA Cup match against Barnsley on Thursday, players such as Mount and Werner are well rested for this game. Both players mention (Mount and Werner) will be looking to make an impact like they did in our last league encounter vs Sheffield United. I do not expect us to cruised to three points here as we’ll need to be at our best but I think we have enough to win this one.

The winning run under Tuchel is continuing and its still all looking pretty good right now. Despite beating Barnsley in the FA Cup in our last game and making it through to the quarter finals, it was an incredibly underwhelming performance and not one that needed much analysis. Now we seem to always say this, but our next game is a huge one in many respects. With Liverpool and Everton losing this match week, our match against Newcastle could see us move into 4th above Liverpool if we beat the Magpies. Of course, Steve Bruce’s side just happen to look more of a threat in games coming into this match, so we shouldn’t be too overconfident about the result. We know the problems that Newcastle have caused us in previous meetings, but in my opinion, I think this will be another game that we take control of early on. Tonight’s performance HAS to be levels above that of the one in the Barnsley game, because if we give Newcastle the chances we gave Barnsley, I am certain they will take them. Despite these looming worries I have mentioned, I think we’ll have enough to get the win.
