It’s been a couple of weeks since we last addressed the Chelsea players on loan, here’s a report of how they got on in England and across Europe in that time up until 26-02-21.
Chelsea Loan Report 26-02-21: Premier League
Starting in the Premier League with Aston Villa where Ross Barkley has become one of the first players on the team sheet for Dean Smith’s men. The first of two games where Barkley featured took place at the Amex where Aston Villa were away to Brighton & Hove Albion. Brighton were on a undefeated run of five games going into this game up until their defeat last Monday to Crystal Palace. The game ended 0-0 in a frustrating evening for Barkley who was eventually subbed off and kicked a water bottle as he felt he could’ve done more for his side. Barkley then started the game against Champions League destined Leicester City, where Barkley had more responsibilities as captain Jack Grealish was out with a knock. Unfortunately for Barkley and Aston Villa they lost the game 2-1. Thus, there is still much to play for as Barkley hopes to push Aston Villa into Europa League qualification, they also sit 8th with two games in hand and could go above Liverpool if they win both their games in hand.
Crystal Palace, who are the next stop in the Premier League for Chelsea , saw Michy Batshuayi starting to get a run in the side in our last loan report, he got a start in their game against Burnley, however were swept aside 3-0 as Batshuayi was subbed off and was an unused substitute in Crystal Palace’s dramatic win at the Amex over the week of 26-02-21.
In chronological order and down the road from Chelsea is Fulham where Ruben Loftus-Cheek has made himself one of Fulham’s best attacking midfielders as they start to push out of the relegation zone. There are three games to address as Fulham didn’t lose in any of the three. Loftus-Cheek (RLC) shined as Fulham surprise former Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti at Everton winning 2-0, having an involvement in the build up to Fulham’s first goal. Next up for RLC and Fulham was Burnley where they took the lead early into the second half but more or less conceded from kick off . However, RLC and his team mates dug out for the point where the game ended 1-1. Crucially, Fulham faced Sheffield United and it was a must win for Scott Parker’s side, Loftus-Cheek made a dazzling run and almost scored just after Fulham’s Ademola Lookman found the winner with half an hour to go. Fulham now sit just three points behind 17th place Newcastle United and the relegation battle is becoming quite entertaining from a neutral point of view. RLC will be determined to keep his loan side up and continue with his impressive performances.
Sheffield United is next and Ethan Ampadu may be one of the only Sheffield United players to shout about for praise. Fans are now glad to see him in the starting eleven after fans were not convinced early in the season. After Ampadu couldn’t play against Chelsea, he started in the FA Cup tie against Bristol City where his side kept a clean sheet, which is a rarity for Sheffield United these days, they now face Chelsea in the last eight of the cup and once again Ampadu can’t play. We won’t go too much into the Fulham game as we’ve addressed it already, Ampadu and Sheffield United were compact but unfortunately lacked that clinical touch where it mattered most. Unfortunately, Sheffield United were turned over 3-0 by West Ham as relegation is glooming over Sheffield United.
Lastly in the Premier League, Conor Gallagher and West Brom had a huge game against Manchester United. Gallagher was a pest in midfield getting underneath the skin of the Man United midfield, a stellar midfielders performance. West Brom took an early lead, but had to settle for an impressive, hard eared point. Even more so, was their point at Burnley as they were playing most of the game with 10 men and scrapped a 0-0 draw. It’s the first time since October that they’ve gone two games without a defeat. It’s a huge task for West Brom to escape relegation but Gallagher will do everything he can with his qualities to do the very best he can and hopefully had some more goals like we saw early in the season.
Championship Chelsea Loan Report: 26-02-21
In the Championship, we will start at Swansea City in this report as one of the most impressive Chelsea loan players, Marc Guehi continues his excellent form for the Swans on 26-02-21 and is beginning to knock on the door for first team opportunities at Chelsea next season. Guehi featured in Swansea’s FA Cup exit to arguably the best team in world at this moment in time, Manchester City. He kept a clean sheet in the games against Nottingham Forest and Coventry City. Swansea now sit 3rd in the Championship with two games in hand and could be top of the Championship if they win both games.
Jake Clarke-Salter is finally becoming a starter for Birmingham City as they are fighting to stay in the second division. He started in a three at the back formation where they lost 2-0 to Millwall, but he started again in their 1-0 away win against Sheffield Wednesday, where his presence recorded Birmingham their 17th clean sheet in all competitions which is impressive for a side that sit 21st in the championship. He also started in their 3-1 defeat to league leader Norwich City.
As for Rotherham United, Jamal Blackman has fallen out of favour as number one as Johansson has started the last 4 games. Rotherham sit in the relegation zone in the Championship.
Izzy Brown made a brief appearance off the bench as struggling Sheffield Wednesday lost to Brentford, Izzy hasn’t even able to break into the starting line up on a regular basis and has been used as a unused substitute most of the time.
Malik Mothersille is still yet to feature for Derby Country after joining two months ago on Deadline day.
The rest of EFL Chelsea Loan Report: 26-02-21
In league one, play off chasing Accrington Stanley have three Chelsea players on loan, that being Tariq Uwakwe, John Russell and goalkeeper Nathan Baxter. Baxter has started the last five, keeping a clean sheet and picking up five points, Tariq Uwakwe has only made a sub appearance as he fights to get his spot in side back and Jon Russel has also made several appearances off the bench.
Ian Maatsen is still very much a regular in the Charlton Athletic side who sit 9th in League One, five points off the play offs. He started the one game and made a couple appearances off the bench after being out with a knock for a couple of weeks.
Luke McCormick has started the last four games including starting in Bristol Rovers incredible win over Portsmouth as they fight to stay up. He also got himself a goal in their 2-1 home defeat to Wigan as now sit on the same amount of points as Wigan (27 points) with a game in hand and a point off the relegation zone.
Just the one player down in League Two and that’s goalkeeper Jamie Cumming as he kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw most recently to Port Vale and a 1-1 draw against Walsall at home. Stevenage are on decent form, picking up 9 points from the last 6 games. They now sit in 20th, 8 points above the relegation zone with 15 games to play.
European Blues on loan
Now let’s head around Europe and to France where Trevor Chalobah is playing for FC Lorient as they fight to stay in France’s top division. He started in their 2-1 win over Ligue 2 side Paris FC in the French Cup. However, he has started the last two games where they ended in defeats to league leaders Lille and 17th place side Nimes. Lorient now find themselves back in the relegation zone a point behind Nimes in 17th.
In Italy, Fikayo Tomori seems to be getting better and better each game for AC Milan even though they have picked up a couple of defeats, which now sits them second in Serie A after being the league leaders for a long time. He started every game since our last report and has formed a great partnership with Alessio Romagnoli, he most recently started the game in the Europa League which saw AC Milan progress to the last-16 where they will face Manchester United.
Tiemoue Bakayoko was back in the Napoli side that beat Juventus 1-0 at home in Serie A, he was out the side for their 2-0 defeat to Granade but ultimately was back in side that lost 4-2 to Atalanta. Napoli won 2-1 against Granade in the Europa League but were knocked out over the two legs. Napoli sit 7th in Serie A, four points off the Champions League places.
Forgotten man Davide Zappacosta and his Genoa side currently sit 12th in Serie A as they picked up back to back draws since their win against Napoli a few weeks ago. Zappacosta started both games picking up a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw to struggling Torino and a draw to Verona where a list minute equaliser made it 2-2.
In Spain, Kenedy is beginning to shine and has very much found his new home as a deal in the summer could see him switch to Granada permanently if they were to approach Chelsea, which is likely! He has started three of the last four games, including a sub appearance in their 3-2 defeat to Huesca. He scored in a 2-0 win over Napoli in the Europa League which saw them progress to the last 16 where they will face Molde and a good chance for Kenedy and his side to progress to the quarter finals. He has three goals in his last five appearances.
To Holland now and Armando Broja has featured in the last four games for Vitesse, he gave Vitesse an early lead in their last game against PSV but unfortunately lost the game 3-1 to a side that are going head to head with Ajax for the title this season.
Marco Van Ginkel, on the other hand, was on that winning side for PSV as he was an unused substitute and this subsequently has been a common occurrence as he has struggled to break into the side since his return in the summer.
Unlike Van Ginkel, Juan Castillo, the young left back, left AZ Alkmaar to join Den Haag on loan from Chelsea where he’s been given game time. He featured off the bench against Van Ginkel’s side PSV in a 2-2 draw and was given his first start in a 2-0 defeat to Fortuna Sittard.
In Turkey, Chelsea loanee Lewis Baker has been in and out of the Trabzonspor side since the departure of Eddie Newton, who are now on a run of 11 games unbeaten, winning their last seven. Baker hasn’t featured for the last two games due to injury, last making an appearance off the bench.
Danny Drinkwater is still yet to make an appearance for Kasimpasa since his January loan move.
In Belgium, Chelsea loanee’s Matt Miazga and Ike Igno both featured for their clubs, Anderlecht (Miazga) and Cercle Brugge (Ugbo). Ike Ugbo was on target in a 2-1 win against Royal Excel, he also played in their 2-0 win over Waasland-Beveren making it back to back wins for Cercle Brugge. Matt Miazga played 3 of the 4 games, one being a cup game, recording one clean sheet and two straight wins.
Briefly in Greece, Baba Rahman made his first league start and got on the score sheet, the left back also recorded a clean sheet and a 4-0 victory.
That concludes our Chelsea loan report for the week of 26-02-21, we will back in a couple weeks to see our loanee’s get on.
