Tottenham vs Chelsea is shaping up to be a fiery and enthralling clash. Both sides have started the season well in terms of results, but the context is slightly different, and Chelsea’s recent form is stronger. Tottenham will still be reeling from their shocking 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace but having Harry Kane back in the starting line-up again will surely be a boost to their confidence. On the other hand, Chelsea are coming from a run of not playing especially well but still managing to get the job done. The games against Villa and Zenit weren’t exactly vintage performance by any stretch of the imagination but some clinical finishing from Romelu Lukaku got the blues over the line.
Despite this, Chelsea will go into this match with better match-sharpness than before and with more key players available. N’golo Kante is back and apart from Christian Pulisic, Chelsea have a fully fit squad to choose from.
Tottenham will be missing Japhet Tanganga through suspension and Steven Berwign through injury. There is also a long list of players who are doubtful, notably Heung-Min Son and Eric Dier.
In true London derby fashion, this match will definitely be one for the battles. Lukaku vs Kane is a proper clash of two world class strikers, while it will be interesting to see how Nuno Espirito Santo sets up to cope with Thomas Tuchel’s system. The Portuguese coach managed to keep Chelsea at bay in Tuchel’s first game last season with a strong back five, although a lot has changed since then and it’s hard to see a team better in a back three system than Chelsea.
Ahead of the match, some of the writers at the Chelsea Social have shared their thoughts on today’s fiery London derby.
It’s another blockbuster London derby awaits as it is Tottenham vs Chelsea at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Chelsea, despite not playing sensationally in the past couple of games, will go into this match confident of continuing their unbeaten run against a team who had suffered their first defeat last week.
Tottenham, prior to their 3-0 smashing from Crystal Palace, had secured three 1 nil victories against Manchester City, Wolves and Watford. While these were impressive results, the reality was their performances weren’t overly flattering and these could have easily been draws or losses had their opponents been more clinical with their chances. Outside of the Premier League in their latest match, Spurs also failed to win against French side Rennes as they had to settle for a come from behind 2-2 in the Uefa Europa Conference League.
On the other hand, the visitors Chelsea continue to demonstrate that they are a difficult team to break down as they have conceded a paltry two goals since the Champions League Final – one in the Super Cup and one penalty against Liverpool. Tuchel mentioned in his press conference that despite not playing brilliantly, he was proud of the way they had managed to be competitive and navigate through some difficult moments to secure important results. With that, I expect that the team will continue to work on improving their starts to games and operate more smoothly in terms of conjuring more clear-cut opportunities in front of goal and start to put away the opposition earlier rather than leaving the door open for an unlikely comeback.
With Son, Bergwijn and Moura all with injury clouds and possibly unavailable for this clash this should improve Chelsea’s chances of dominating a weakened Spurs. That said, when sides are carrying some injuries and have their backs against the walls, that’s when they are at their most dangerous, especially when they are versing a bitter rival!
While Tuchel confirmed Kanté is back and available for this match, I’d be inclined to ease him back into it and reintegrate slowly over the next few games, particularly with City and Juventus coming up after the Carabao Cup clash against Villa.
Given this, my preferred line-up for Tottenham vs Chelsea is: Mendy, Rudiger, Christensen, Azpilicueta, Alonso, James, Jorginho, Kovacic, Mount, Havertz, Lukaku. However, I’d also be comfortable with Chilwell coming in place of Alonso, Azpilicueta for James (given his personal ordeal he experienced with his burglary) and Chalobah in RCB for Azpilicueta. Either way, whoever starts I expect an intense and committed display.
Ultimately, this is another 3 points we need to collect, beating Spurs in the process is just a bonus!
Prediction: Tottenham 0 – 2 Chelsea

The infamous rivalry once again makes headway. Despite the North London being main rivalry in the city, Tottenham vs Chelsea always entertains us with their clashes.
The heated tension between the two clubs can stem from all the way to the top of the hierarchy as both Daniel Levy and Roman Abramovich are not at the best of terms. The eventful Battle of the Bridge in 2016 always comes into the minds of Spurs fans due to our interference in their title-contending season. Since then, the animosity has been at an all time high.
We’ve been getting the better out of the Spurs in the last few years beating them in key matches. Today is no exception. Nuno Espírito Santo has gotten this Spurs team to be a team of traps. I expect them to sit and allow us to play from the back. However their press is unique. They will start to press and bait us in traps once we get in midfield. We will need to be careful as they can dangerous in transitions and on the counter. Chelsea must be vigilant whenever we make a risky passes.
The Blues will need to be clinical as the Tottenham voice will be high in their grand and illustrious new stadium. Despite their rapid start, they have their flaws and I expect us to be up for this London Derby. My final prediction is a 2-1 win in what should be an entertaining and physical match.
Prediction: Tottenham 1-2 Chelsea

When the fixtures are released each year, Tottenham vs Chelsea is always the first one I look for. It’s just a massive game and in my opinion, it’s one of the most important matches we will play all season. Not just in terms of getting an important 3 points in the title race, but in terms of putting Spuds in their place.
Truthfully though, ahead of this game I’m nervous. I’ve always felt that the best way to play against us is by matching up in a 3-5-2/3-4-3. Nuno did this to great effect last season with Wolves and considering the injury issues plaguing Tottenham, I could see him doing the same today.
As a result, it becomes really important that are on our game, are sharp, and take our chances. The return of N’golo Kante in midfield is a massive boost and means we can essentially line up with our strongest possible eleven. I would also predict us seeing Azpi play at wing back, who, to his credit, has put in some good performances there for Thomas Tuchel.
My final prediction would be a hard fought, narrow win or draw. I don’t see us getting too many chances in this one so being clinical is key.
Prediction: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

Always a fiery, quality encounter, the latest iteration of Tottenham vs Chelsea is unlikely to be any different. Enjoying somewhat of a resurgence under Nuno Espirito Santo to start the season, Spurs looked solid if unspectacular as they recorded three 1-0 wins on the bounce. Despite a 3-0 defeat to Palace last week, that result ignores the context of the fact that all the goals came after Japhet Tanganga was sent off. As an oft-cynical Chelsea fan, I am reticent to take anyting for granted against an opponent with as much quality in their team as Spurs.
From a Chelsea point of view, Thomas Tuchel has enjoyed a very good start to the season, leading his charges to an unbeaten start in all competitions so far. The fear with respect to Chelsea is that a lot depends on Romelu Lukaku in attack at the moment. Though a world class operator, the sentiment I retain is that the other attackers – Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi – need to step up and deliver more attacking contributions. This is such that Lukaku not only is less burdened but also such that the opponents we face have more to think about.
Going into the game, Chelsea have the better form and are defensively resolute. It will, nevertheless, be a very tough game. I predict a very narrow win for Chelsea, who will need all the momentum and quality they can get to walk away with the three points.
Prediction: Tottenham 0 – 1 Chelsea

Chelsea face yet another early test of their title credentials this weekend as they take on London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
History tells us that this game will be boil down to more than just three points, with both sides’s pride at stake. This will no doubt be 90 minutes of animosity and bruised egos.
Chelsea have had the edge on Tottenham since their North London rivals moved into their new stadium, and the form book tells us that this good run of results is likely to continue.
Having started the league season with three wins from their opening three games, Tottenham have struggled as a result of injuries and suspensions. A 2-2 draw away at Rennes on Thursday was a commendable result, but now means Nuno Esperito Santo’s men are winless in their last two. Where as Chelsea, despite not playing their best football, have recorded two wins from two against Aston Villa and Zenit St Petersburg, respectively.
With Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn both suffering injuries in midweek Tottenham will struggle to break down a defence that has conceded just once this season. Spurs are equally adept at the back and will welcome the returns of Christian Romero and Davinson Sanchez from isolation. Chelsea, however, showed that in Romelu Lukaku they have a player capable of making the difference when games are tight.
Prediction: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea
