After the second of three early season international breaks, Chelsea are back in action this weekend and will be hoping to take the sting out of the newly promoted Brentford Bee’s. This will be Chelsea’s first fixture of the season against a newly promoted team and also their first trip to the brand-new Brentford Community Stadium. Tickets are elusive, the stakes will be high, and things are setting up for an enthralling match.
Everything points to this being a tricky match for the Blues and one that Thomas Tuchel can’t take lightly. Brentford play without fear and also like to pack the midfield, a style that Aston Villa have already shown to be effective against Chelsea. When you also factor in Anthony Taylor, a referee notorious for his treatment of Chelsea, this is a match that Chelsea will need to be on their A game to win.
Regarding team news, Chelsea will be missing Christian Pulisic, Antonio Rudiger and Hakim Ziyech through injury. In truly bizarre fashion, Thiago Silva is also unavailable due to playing for Brazil in his home country at 3am on Friday morning. Sometimes international breaks defy belief..
For Brentford, Mads Sorensen and Josh DaSilva are out injured, while Vitaliy Janelt, Kristoffer Ajer and Shandon Baptiste are all doubts.
If ever a game felt like a potential banana skin, it’s this one. However, that’s exactly why it’s so important. This is the kind of match that Chelsea would definitely drop points in last season. It feels like if Chelsea can rise above the challenges and still collect all three points tomorrow then it would be the mark of a team that can go all the way.
Ahead of the match, some of the writers at The Chelsea Social have shared their predictions on Brentford vs Chelsea will go.

After two long weeks, the Blues are finally back, starting with a West London derby! A lot has happened in the past couple of weeks, including standout performances from Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Andreas Christensen, and Ben Chilwell for their respective countries. However, as it is widely known, regaining shape is never easy after the international break, as players have to readjust playing style and the physical demands of the Premier League.
That is, especially when the opponent is a stubborn Brentford team, playing at home, with team reports stating that all internationals came back well. In addition to a fit squad, it is pertinent to mention the Bees’ run of good results and impressive momentum, including a tie with Liverpool and a win against West Ham. Thus, they have proved they relentlessly dominate the underdog position, having been able to demonstrate their worth and hard-working character. It will be on Tuchel’s side to take on the pressure and meet efforts to capitalize fully on the challenge.
Regarding Chelsea’s squad involvement for tomorrow, there isn’t as much good news as we hoped there would be. Thiago Silva, Toni Rudiger, Christian Pulisic, and Hakim Ziyech will be out of the squad tomorrow. On the other hand, N’Golo Kante and Reece James are back to fitness, as is our main man in attack, Romelu Lukaku. With that being said, I hope to see something similar to Mendy, Chalobah, Christensen, Azpilicueta, Chilwell, RLC, Kovacic, James, Mount, Werner, and Lukaku.
May the Blues match the Bees’ attitude and hunger to win, and get the better of this intense, energetic match. Come on you Blues!
Prediction: Brentford 1 – 3 Chelsea

The international break is over. Phew. Chelsea are back and the tough mixture of Brentford, Anthony Taylor and no Antonio Rudiger all pose challenging questions for the Blues to answer on Saturday evening.
I’m looking forward to seeing the lineup, with Timo Werner looking confident I expect him to get the nod in a forward position, hopefully Callum Hudson-Odoi is also given an extended run in the side. The defence could look makeshift without Silva or Rudiger but it gives exciting opportunities to Trevoh Chalobah as he settles in at Stamford Bridge for good.
Brentford will undoubtedly be a strong opponent, one that with their loyal backing, new stadium, promising manager and talented squad will demand the full attention of Thomas Tuchel.
After seeing Liverpool and Arsenal already drop points at the Brentford Community Stadium seeing how Chelsea’s stern defence deals with Ivan Toney will be one of the key battles to look out for. With Loftus-Cheek’s return to the side and Chelsea’s depth, I think that Chelsea will be able to get the victory that would see them remain on top of the Premier League.
It is anything but a certainty, but for a side that want to, and have rightfully earned their place in the conversation as title contenders this is a match that Chelsea need to be winning.
Prediction: Brentford 0-1 Chelsea

Club football is back but with it, the unfortunate availability of several first team players. But top teams including Chelsea will need to muster up the results regardless. Especially against a side that has just been promoted.
Brentford though have had a strong start to their Premier League campaign. They’ve won three, drawn three and lost only once in seven matches. They play aggressive and attractive football under the Danish manager, Thomas Frank. It will be a difficult affair as they have physicality and pace in their ranks. We will need to be vigilant in all areas to get a result away from home even if it’s still in London.
I predict a feisty match filled with action and attacking opportunities for both sides. Hopefully we can be clinical when those chances arrived. I expect Chalobah and players who have stayed during international break to be given a chance but it will not be easy. C’mon Chels!
Prediction: Brentford 1-2 Chelsea

We’ve successfully made it through another international break and our beloved Chelsea is back on action on Saturday. Chelsea travel to Brentford to take on a so-far impressive Brentford size that will be far from an easy task. It seems the league knew of our joy for this occasion and decided to send one man that can ruin it all. Anthony Taylor. We’ve had the opposite of a good time whenever this man is in control. Penalty kicks awarded against us, red cards, suspensions you name it, Taylor’s done it to Chelsea. This time I do hope it’s different, but it’s hard to try and think that way when the majority of the time these matches don’t go our way.
While we will be missing the likes of Rudiger, Pulisic, Silva, and Ziyech, main men Mount, Kante, and Reece James have returned to training and Lukaku is healthy and ready to go as well. This match won’t be a breeze though as Brentford is finding their Premier League form and giving most of the opponents a good run for their money. Chelsea will have to be strong-willed and very composed in order to see this game out. They’ll know of the risks both Anthony Taylor and Brentford possess and I’m sure tactical Tuchel will have a solid game plan and I expect to remain to be top of the table at the end of this week’s matches.
Prediction: Brentford 0-2 Chelsea
This game has all the makings of being a very awkward and difficult evening for Chelsea. It comes straight after the international break against a side that have shocked many with their impressive performances so far and the Blues will be without key defenders Thiago Silva and Antonio Rüdiger.
Brentford’s fearless nature has attracted several admirers in their first seven games and results like the one against 2019/20 champions Liverpool three weeks ago serve as a mark of this. Their “in your face” nature combined with the passionate home crowd will arguably pose the biggest threat to a Chelsea side who showed signs of fragility when Aston Villa did something similar to them.
Although the international break arguably came at the wrong time for Chelsea after the confidence boosting Southampton win, it did allow misfiring Germans Kai Havertz and Timo Werner to regain some form and confidence. Whilst it also allowed Ben Chilwell to build on his goal against the Saints with one in Andorra. With all of them going to be important players over the coming games, Thomas Tuchel will see this as a very welcome boost.
As I mentioned at the start, this won’t be an easy game in the slightest. The home crowd will be well up for the contest and it is critical Chelsea don’t help to fuel that with another one of their recent slow starts. Someone like Mason Mount with his energy in the midfield could well be crucial in trying to wrestle the control of the game in Chelsea’s favour.
Overall, I expect Chelsea to beat their West London neighbours albeit not by much but a lot of that will come down to whether we take our chances when they come.
Score prediction: Brentford 1-2 Chelsea
