The WSL champions made seven changes after the weekend victory over Aston Villa. Zecira Musovic came into the net, with Jess Carter also joining Millie Bright, Magda Eriksson. Erin Cuthbert and Guro Reiten occupied their now-familiar wingback roles. Another new pivot pairing saw Melly Leupolz alongside Drew Spence. Jessie Fleming started in a front 3 with Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby.

Notably, Chelsea also named Lauren James, and the returning Maren Mjelde on the bench.

First Half

Chelsea started with intent and took 8 minutes to open the scoring. Millie Bright’s searching pass found Melly Leupolz. She cut inside to make room and finished brilliantly. After 15, it was 2. Drew Spence’s pass to Sam Kerr was cleverly flicked on by the Australian to Fran Kirby. She finished well from just inside the box.

18 minutes and Reiten’s deep cross was pulled by Leupolz to Kerr to make it 3. 60 seconds later, Kirby’s floated pass over the top released Kerr and she finished coolly to make it 4. As Servette floundered, Chelsea continued to attack. On the 25th minute, Melly Leupolz’s pass released Jessie Fleming. The Canadian passed across to Fran Kirby who composed herself and dinked a finish into the net.

Kirby turned creator on the 38th minute, as her brilliant pass through the line released Jessie Fleming. Although the angle was tight, she finished brilliantly at the angle to grab her 2nd goal in as many games.

At half-time, six did not flatter the rampant away side.

Second Half

Chelsea started the second half in similar blistering style. Erin Cuthbert’s clever looped pass set Sam Kerr away. The Aussie tried to lob the keeper but her effort bounced agonisingly wide. Chelsea did grab a 7th on the 49th minute, however.

Drew Spence played in Sam Kerr and the Australian unselfishly squared inside the box. Although the ball looked destined for Kirby, it actually arrived at the feet of Reiten. The Norwegian made no mistake, slamming home.

Chelsea had chances for further goals. Kirby found Kerr who teed up Spence, but her effort crashed back off the bar. Spence drove another effort wide as they chased an 8th.

On the 66th minute, Chelsea welcomed back Maren Mjelde for the first time since March. The Norwegian defender had been injured in the Conti Cup Final, so it was especially great to see her return after 8 months out.
