Chelsea vs Juventus: Champions League Score Predictions

It’s only the second game back for Chelsea since the International break but already it’s time for one of the most important matches of the season so far. Ever since the Champions League was drawn, it was obvious that Chelsea vs Juventus would be the fixture that determines the winner of Group H. With Juventus on 12 points and Chelsea on nine, things seem delicately poised. Win tonight, and top spot is still on for Chelsea, lose and second place is all but confirmed. It’s all or nothing in the race for first place

The last match between Chelsea and Juventus didn’t go so well for the Blues. They were beaten quite comfortably 1-0 in the reverse Champions League fixture thanks to a Chiesa goal just after half time. This doesn’t come as a shock though as Chelsea have struggled against Italian opposition in recent years and haven’t beaten one since Napoli in 2012. Chelsea will be hoping to put the record straight and get a big three points at Stamford Bridge.

Thomas Tuchel said in the presser that Romelu Lukaku will be touch and go but won’t start. Other than that, Kai Havertz is also a doubt and Mateo Kovacic is still out with a hamstring injury. Jorginho is reportedly absolutely fine after being substituted early against Leicester.

Juventus have several of doubts as well. Paulo Dybala may be involved but is apparently unlikely to start. Bernardeschi, Ramsey, Chiellini, De Sciglio and Danilo are all set to be absent.

Although Chelsea don’t need to win to qualify from the group, they will surely want to get the three points and go top anyway. We saw in Lampard’s first season what happens when you mess around in the group stages and no one wants a repeat of that Bayern Munich round of 16 draw. Qualifying top of the group is important and there is no doubt that Tuchel will be desperate to win this match.

Ahead of the game, some of the writers at The Chelsea Social have shared their predictions on how things will turn out.

Dan Hill (@idanknow05)

The concept of a “just win” game – where the performance is elementary and the result imperative – was a familiar one last season when Chelsea pushed for qualification for the Champions League.

It’s interesting that, in order to win the group, we find ourselves confronting one of these games yet again. Juventus is the opponent and owing to that 1-0 reverse courtesy of a Federico Chiesa strike in Turin, the fine margins mean just that: to be group winners, Chelsea must win.

Qualification looks all but secured with a 6-point and 5-goal difference to Zenit in third place, but the security of knowing the Blues could avoid the likes of Bayern Munich or PSG in the first knockout round are enticing.

Juventus have been well below their usual standard in Serie A but have shown a clear imperious game in Europe. To beat them and shrewd tactician Max Allegri will take a performance befitting the reigning European Champions. It is one that Chelsea are capable of, especially at home.

What will be interesting is the make up of Chelsea’s attack. With Lukaku working his way back to fitness, Kai Havertz nursing a hamstring complaint and Timo Werner only recently restored to the matchday squad, it’s uncertain who will start upfront for Chelsea. Indeed, the makeup of the entire front three will be crucial in registering Chelsea’s chances of getting the required result here.

Of course, Chelsea needs just one point to mathematically secure qualification. That much should be achievable against Juve.

As this Chelsea side have been nothing short of superb in all but two games this season, I fully back them to be just that when it matters. Let’s go, Chelsea!

Prediction: Chelsea 2-0 Juventus

The top two teams in Group H meet again in another blockbuster Champions League match! Except this time, at Stamford Bridge – looking to compensate for the (disappointing) 1-0 loss back in Turin. It is important to emphasize that a win by two goal margin could open up the lead of the group to the Blues, meaning we would have the chance to get weaker opponents in the knockout stage.

After performances on Saturday of players such as Pulisic, Hudson-Odoi, and Ziyech, the offensive situation looks pretty different since the last time both teams met, with Tuchel having a bit more options to explore. Even though Lukaku is not ready to play a full 90 minutes yet, Timo Werner is ready to go back to the mix, in order to add speed and off-the-ball movements when building up plays with the creativity brought on by Chelsea’s wingers, whether they are coming off from the bench or starting right away.

As for the Vecchia Signora, the team’s scenario will also be quite different when it comes to team availability, as Morata and Dybala are likely to be involved in Allegri’s side. Furthermore, this will definitely be a tough clash, and if Juve takes a defensive approach aiming to defend their current group position, it will certainly take a lot of pushing and intensity from the Blues. If the team does display the same confidence and urgency as they did in the Leicester game, though, it would be a surprise for us not to secure the win. C’mon you Blues!

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Juventus

The 1-0 loss to Juventus in September marked a second loss in the space of a few days. However, Chelsea haven’t lost since that game going nine unbeaten in the process. In that run they have moved clear at the top of the league and more importantly got their Champions League campaign back on track with two wins against Swedish opposition in Malmö. This game on Tuesday night will be pivotal in deciding who tops the group and Chelsea will be desperate for it to be them.

The return of German striker Timo Werner will give Thomas Tuchel and the team a much needed boost with Romelu Lukaku still recovering from his injury and Kai Havertz a doubt for the game. Whether he will be able to play the full 90 minutes is yet to be seen and could lead to Christian Pulisic getting a chance through the middle like he did off the bench Saturday.

Despite sitting top of the group, Juventus have had an underwhelming season so far as they sit sixth in Serie A and went winless for three games before the most recent international break, making them potentially vulnerable to a rampant Chelsea team. Chelsea will have to be wary of the attacking threats that Juventus pose such as Federico Chiesa but with one of the best defences in the world and an attack that is finally starting to sing, a comfortable win should be in store for the Blues.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-0 Juventus

This match is so important for Chelsea and I’m expecting us to be really up for it. Finishing second in the group can be costly in the Champions League and ultimately might result in us going out of the competition early to a team like Bayern or PSG.

I’m expecting to see more influential performances from our excellent wing backs tonight. Chilwell and Reece James have probably been our most influential players of the season and their attacking abilities could be what we need to get goals against an out of form Juventus side.

It’s currently looking like Romelu Lukaku and Kai Havertz could miss out so it’ll be interesting to see who starts up front. The obvious option is Timo Werner but Juventus’s deep defensive line may not suit him that well. I’m wondering therefore, if we might see Christian Pulisic get a chance in the false 9 role which he played to pretty decent effect against Leicester.

Whoever plays, they will need service and as a result, I think Callum Hudson-Odoi will be a key player for Chelsea if he starts. He is so creative with his passing and it’s an attribute that could be the difference in breaking down a stubborn defence.

Overall, I’m expecting a tight and disciplined game from both sides, but for Chelsea to eventually get the breakthrough and win. Juventus aren’t the side they were, and it would be poor from us if we can’t finish ahead of them in the group. Come on Chelsea!

Prediction: Chelsea 1-0 Juventus

Chelsea welcome Italian giants Juventus in a key Champions League clash today. While Juventus remain top of the Champions League group Chelsea will look to overtake that spot going into the final match day.

Chelsea’s form both domestically and in Europe has been pristine. Gathering positive results and clean sheets galore. While Juventus have been struggling in recent games. They’ve won three out of their last five but have looked unconvincing at times.

Chelsea will look to maintain their positive form against a side that still can produce a lot of energy and still do have the talent to win, however, Juventus just haven’t been clicking as of late.

While Chelsea will be without Kai Havertz and Mateo Kovacic, Juventus will be without a few key names as well. Chiellini, Danilo and Bernardeschi will be among the few that will miss this match and Chelsea’s attack will be sure to take advantage of Chiellini’s experience and leadership being missing from the back line of Juventus.

While you can never count out Juventus i believe Chelsea’s form make them favorites for this one. With our squad depth it will be easy to have players fill in for Havertz and Kovacic and Lukaku if he is still not at 100% match fitness. I expect a good game, but the Blues to come out on top of this one and to be group leaders by the end of the day.

Prediction: Chelsea 3-1 Juventus
