Gameweek 13: Chelsea Fantasy Premier League Preview – Marcos Alonso the new wingback star alongside roaring Reece James?

Okay, for gameweek 13 we have some good news and some pretty terrible news. The bad news first, Ben Chilwell, the sixth top scoring defender in the game, will be out for at least six weeks, missing all of the Christmas period. The good news, Reece James looks more than likely to reap all of those points from Chilwell and keep them for himself.

In a nutshell, that’s the big deal for this week’s Fantasy Football. With Chelsea playing a leaky Manchester United side on Sunday afternoon, Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner being back on the bench, the German in the goals as well, there are an abundance of players to pick from this week. Here’s the lowdown on which ones to pick.

Reece James, honestly just do it

If you aren’t on the James fantasy train then really, where have you been for the past five weeks, at least. His last five game weeks have got 53 points in return, that alone would put him in the top six defenders on the game.

He’s arguably the most in form player in the league, he’s certainly the most electrifying to watch right now. Along with his Champions League goal in midweek, he now has four goals and three assists in his last seven starts for club and country. A goal contribution a game from right wingback across a month is outrageous and totally dominant on an unheard of level.

He is only going to increase in price from the 6.1m that he now costs, that’s still second cheapest inside the top five defenders on the game.

He’s too good not to have right now, don’t be apart of the 70% that haven’t got him.

The attack is back, so back the attack

Lukaku was back on the Chelsea bench and so was Werner in midweek. Only the latter got any minutes, rewarding the faith with a goal during his 18 minute spell on the pitch. In his last nine starts he has eight goals and two assists for club and country.

Though his Premier League return is just one goal and one assist, he’s had a stop-start campaign so far, but his form has picked up markedly in the past two months and Chelsea could be about to get their own prize for that.

There isn’t much to back in terms of Werner’s FPL stats, 18 points really is a terrible return after 12 gameweeks and for 8.6m he isn’t as cheap or trendy as some of the other striker options.

Out of Werner and Lukaku, the former is much more likely to start against Manchester United but even that is less than a given. It is certainly worth keeping in mind that these two players are on their way back for Chelsea though, especially as no forward has particularly ran away with the points so far.

Gameweek 13: Pick of the week

The obvious answer here is James really, but we’ll go rogue. With the absence of Chilwell and the need for another left wingback, Marcos Alonso is first in line for the role. He also wouldn’t be a terrible choice.

The Spaniard had a typically brilliant, roaring start to the season, 38 of his 39 points came in the first six game, a healthy average for a player as cheap as 5.6m. It would be typically Alonso-y to get a goal on his return.

The faith in his goalscoring, and also his suitability for an increasingly attacking position in Thomas Tuchel’s team mean that already 8% of managers have turned to him or kept him in the team.

Outside of Trevoh Chalobah, Edouard Mendy, Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger and James, obviously, Alonso is a sensible pick, especially before extra training with Cesar Azpilicueta or Saul can be done in the left wingback spot.
