Burnley vs Chelsea: Score Predictions

After a long week of cup action and a difficult midweek fixture, Chelsea are back in Premier League action this weekend for a rare three o’clock kickoff; the opposition this time around is 17th place Burnley and although a few weeks ago they looked dead and buried, new signing Wout Weghorst has breathed new life into the side. With two wins and seven points from their last five games, Burnley are a team in decent form and could pose some difficult questions to Chelsea.

Thankfully for the Blues, Turf Moor has been a ground Chelsea have enjoyed visiting in recent years. They’ve won six of their last seven there against the clarets and haven’t lost since 1983. Chelsea have also been stronger on the road this season and will be keen to keep up their impressive away form.

Going into the match, Chelsea has some good news regarding player fitness. Ziyech, Chalobah and James are all fit to start after fighting to regain sharpness. Unfortunately, Azpilicueta is still not ready to be involved and Ben Chilwell remains out with a long-term injury.

Burnley on the other hand could be set to miss a couple of key players. Captain Ben Mee is reportedly a doubt after a knee injury, while Gudmundsson, Pieters, Vydra and Stephens are all out.

This should in theory be a routine three points for Chelsea but Burnley have shown over the last few weeks that they aren’t going down without a fight. Sean Dyche has drilled them well and in Weghorst they have legitimate fire power up front. Burnley will feel they can get something from this game and Chelsea need to match their desire if they want another big three points.

Ahead of the match, some of the writers at The Chelsea Social have shared their predictions:

The heavy cloud of uncertainty continues to loom for Chelsea football club. With the eventual departure of Roman Abramovich, Chelsea will face Burnley away from home. Throughout all the noise, this must be a must win as the top four race continues to get tighter.

With only Azpi being out to injury, Tuchel has the chance to put back Havertz and Ziyech back in the lineup as they have been our best attackers in the last month. Nevertheless, Mount and Pulisic are good shouts despite their misses in the Carabao final this past Sunday.

We will need to be sharp especially in midfield. Sean Dyche never disappoints in intensity and physicality so matching those energy levels will be paramount. I predict a dominant game of possession where Burnley will try to find gaps behind our wingbacks.

I am hopefully of a victory especially with our flexible squad as we can switch to back four if needed and attack in numbers. My final prediction is a narrow 1-0 win for the Blues.

You will not find a better way to sum up the life as a Chelsea fan than the last seven days. A cryptic statement from Roman Abramovich on Saturday evening. A loss on penalties in the Carabao Cup final Sunday. Before reports started to come out of Abramovich selling the club that were then dramatically confirmed an hour before kick off against Luton. Then a scrappy win in the FA Cup against Luton.

Attention turns back to the Premier League and on Friday morning, Thomas Tuchel himself admitted he had struggled to recall Chelsea’s last three games in the competition such has been the schedule for the last month. Dreams of a first title since 2016/17 are long gone and the sole aim is ensuring the new owner, whoever they may be, is presiding over Champions League football next season.

Burnley themselves can’t get enough of league action after several weather/Covid related postponements over the festive period and have only lost two in their last eight. Things still look bleak for the Lancashire based club but the duo of Wout Weghorst up front and Maxwell Cornet will be licking their lips at a stretched Chelsea defence.

I don’t expect to see anything like Wednesday evening with Ruben Loftus-Cheek starting in defence on Saturday, but Cesar Azpilicueta is still a doubt for the game although thankfully the German head coach stated both Thiago Silva and Trevoh Chalobah should be available.

Earlier in the season, the two sides drew 1-1 with Matej Vydra grabbing a late equaliser and all signs point towards another tight encounter although the recent productivity of the likes of Kai Havertz and Romelu Lukaku should give the Blues the edge at Turf Moor.

Chelsea have played just a couple of games in the Premier League in the last six weeks but the contrast that exists between the state of the club then and now couldn’t be more stark, both positively and negatively.

Back then, Chelsea weren’t world champions. Now they are. Back then, Chelsea were owned by Roman Abramovich and that didn’t look like changing at all. And now it is.

If there is one thing that is consistent at Chelsea Football Club, it is change. But if there is one thing that needs to be consistent from now until May, it is results. With as many as six different clubs vying for a place in next season’s Champions League, the remit for Thomas Tuchel’s men is to win, quickly and consistently. The sooner distance is put between Chelsea and the chasing top 4 pack, the better.

And it starts against Burnley. If there is one thing The Clarets like to do it is sit deep, defend and loook to capitalise on set pieces to get wins. That is precisely the kind of style of football that has proven so frustrating for Chelsea in recent seasons. An inability to break the lines, create space and find an opening to score, this will be a tough game against a side who are fighting for their Premier League lives.

That said, I expect a narrow win for Chelsea perhaps with a goal from distance from Hakim Ziyech. Against the backdrop of the off-field issues, a win here would be huge.

And I back the Blues to get it. UTC!

Notably, Luton Town caught Chelsea off guard during midweek amidst the commotion caused by Roman Abramovich’s farewell statement. Now, with Burnley fighting for their lives at the bottom of the league, Tuchel’s side must show extra confidence against the Clarets to avoid going back to London without results.

The starting XI should include a (completely) different Chelsea lineup compared to the one against Luton. In the last FA Cup fixture, there were far too many individual mistakes. Besides, the team looked disjointed, with no chemistry at all. What might help to revert the situation is to go back to a more familiar setup: a back-three. And in that way, include Reece James and Alonso as wing-backs – both of whom performed brilliantly in the EFL Cup final. Moreover, a formation free of risks can cooperate to prevent unwelcome surprises from Sean Dyche’s side, who have managed to win 7 points from 3 games against Brighton, Spurs, and Crystal Palace.

Also, now that Hakim Ziyech is back from injury, having his name in the lineup should be a no-brainer. In his best phase at the club so far, hopefully, Ziyech will continue to perform effectively and contribute with his creativity and precision on the pitch. Thus, Chelsea has the squad and the tactics to return performing well in the league. The mentality, however, has still got a lot to improve, and optimistically, this could be one more step towards consolidating a forward-thinking mindset. Finally, my prediction is Burnley 1 – 2 Chelsea.

Come on, you Blues!
