Manchester United vs Chelsea Preview: Blues look to continue their good run against struggling Red Devils

After a trio of London derbies, Chelsea head north to face one of their old foes Manchester United, who are unbeaten against Chelsea at Old Trafford since 2013.

Both sides are undergoing periods of change with Chelsea’s ownership changing whilst Manchester United announced last week that Ajax manager Erik ten Haag will take over from Ralf Rangnick.

Manchester United vs Chelsea: Current Form (Last five matches)

Chelsea: W-W-W-L-W

After the heavy home defeats to Brentford and Real Madrid, Chelsea have bounced back with four wins in their last five. Southampton were dismissed 6-0 on the South coast before they fell just short of a historic comeback in the Bernabeu with a 3-2 win.

The attention soon changed to the FA Cup and Crystal Palace were swiped aside as the Blues reached their third consecutive final before a shock 4-2 defeat at home to Arsenal. However, at the weekend they bounced back in a tight win over Europa League stars West Ham.

Manchester United: D-L-W-L-L

On the contrary, for Manchester United the last few weeks have been ones to forget. They came from behind to draw 1-1 against Leicester at home before a major blow to their top four hopes were handed out to them by Everton.

A bounce back 3-2 win over Norwich followed a week later albeit one that came with a lot of struggle. Then another humiliating defeat at the hands of title challengers Liverpool preceded their third defeat in four this time at the Emirates as Arsenal ran out 3-1 winners.

Team News and Predicted Line-ups

Chelsea

There is one new absentee for Chelsea after Sunday with that being Ross Barkley, who is unwell, and alongside him all of Mateo Kovacic, Ben Chilwell and Callum Hudson-Odoi are still unavailable. The trio of Antonio Rüdiger, Reece James and Andreas Christensen will all be subject to last minute fitness decisions.

Consequently, the defence is likely to be the same as Sunday with Thomas Tuchel not willing to risk anyone ahead of the run in. Saul may feature in midfield although N’golo Kante, Jorginho and the two wingbacks will most likely retain their spots. Up front Tuchel will have a decision to make on whether to start Sunday’s matchwinner Christian Pulisic over

Predicted XI: Mendy, Chalobah, Silva, Azpilicueta, Loftus-Cheek, Kante, Jorginho, Alonso, Mount, Havertz, Pulisic

Manchester United

For Manchester United they have a whole host of injuries with only 14 senior players available for the game. All of Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho, Paul Pogba, Fred, Edinson Cavani and Luke Shaw are unavailable with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and others having question marks over their fitness.

Because of the injury the backline and two midfielders in front of the defence are expected to remain the same. Also, Bruno Fernandes, Anthony Elanga and Cristiano Ronaldo will retain their places with the only question mark being over who replaces the ill Sancho.

Predicted XI: De Gea, Dalot, Lindelöf, Varane, Telles, McTominay, Matic, Elanga, Fernandes, Rashford, Ronaldo

Final Thoughts and Prediction

It has nearly been nine years since Chelsea last left the Theatre of Dreams with maximum points and it will be a run the players and Tuchel will be desperate to put to an end and help solidify their spot in the league’s top four. Whereas for Manchester United, a steep task is ahead of them as they look to battle for the Europa League spots and reverse a torrid run of form that has seen them win two in 10. Not only will they want to improve that run, they will also want to keep their record against Chelsea at home intact which makes them a dangerous prospect. However, the form of Chelsea’s key players and performances over the season should be enough to see off their latest challengers.

Final score: Manchester United 1-2 Chelsea
