Manchester United vs Chelsea: Premier League Score Predictions

Introduction

With a top four finish now looking extremely likely for Chelsea, the main priority has become to guard against complacency and finish the season strongly. This will be all too important in tonight’s Premier League match against out of form Manchester United.

On paper, this is a game Chelsea should win comfortably. United are missing several key players, are playing poorly and have a negative atmosphere around the fanbase. Still, Chelsea haven’t won at Old Trafford in nine years and have proven against Arsenal that they are still capable of not showing up in these sorts of games. This will be an interesting match and Tuchel will be looking to keep the performance levels high as he closes out the season.

There is some good news for Chelsea on the team selection front. Rudiger, James and Christensen who all missed the previous match are back in training so should be available. However, Kovacic and Hudson-Odoi are still out, although are reportedly getting closer to a return. Ben Chilwell remains side-lined with his long-term ACL injury.

As mentioned earlier, Manchester United have a long and star-studded absentee list. Fred, Maguire, Sancho, Cavani, Pogba and Shaw are all out with various injuries or illnesses, while Wan-Bissaka is a doubt who will be assessed ahead of kick-off.

Although Manchester United are in trouble both in terms of form and player availability, it seems inevitable that they will turn up against Chelsea. For this reason, The Blues will need to keep their performance levels high and dominate the game from the offset. Typically, United don’t respond well to going a goal down and the already sour atmosphere can easily turn toxic. If Chelsea can score first, then it will make all the difference in winning this match.

Ahead of kickoff, some of the writers at The Chelsea Social have made their predictions:

Can Chelsea finally win beat Manchester United at Old Trafford?

Vik (@CFCVik)

Having not won at Old Trafford since 12/13, this will certainly be another tough match where it can go either way. I look at our performance against a weakened West Ham a few days ago and there wasn’t much to get excited about. We look fatigued and distracted with the owner situation. Rangnick earlier confirmed that they’re going to be without a number of players; Maguire, Fred and Sancho unavailable. But that doesn’t really give me extra hope.

We’re out of the UCL with our aims for this season to just secure 3rd and hopefully win the FA Cup. We’ve not beat Utd in the league since 17/18 which seems like many years ago now. I will just be so surprised if we go there tomorrow and beat them.

Lukaku still hasn’t really got going, but I would start him alongside Havertz/Werner with Mount behind in a 3-4-1-2. We’re going to need to be disciplined and clinical. Some will think we’ll comfortably win especially with United’s poor season but that isn’t how it works with us. We let Arsenal find form again and I fear we’ll do the same with United tomorrow. We have the better team available on paper, but I would be very surprised to see us come away with the 3 points.

Prediction: Manchester United 0-0 Chelsea

Another big match awaits for Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea as we take on Manchester United and Ralf Rangnick knowing three points will take us that step closer to securing a Champions League place for next season.

However, we face a tough assignment at Old Trafford, a ground we have not won at since 2013. Despite that, Chelsea will look to end that torrid run and Thursday night is the perfect opportunity for that to happen. Sunday’s late victory against West Ham was a much-needed result but the performance was disappointing, and improvements are very much needed against the red half of Manchester.

A win for the Blues will take us ten points clear of 5th place Spurs with five games to go mean top four will be all but secured. I reckon Chelsea will edge this one but it’s not going to be easy despite United’s poor form. Come on you Blues!

Prediction: Manchester United 1-2 Chelsea

Maria Dulce (@usernamedulce)

Although Chelsea has not had the best run of performances as of late, the Blues’ form is no way near as worrying as Man United’s tragic current scenario. For that reason, unless the Charity FC spirit miserably turns up on the pitch, it is unlikely that the Red Devils can secure any points against the Blues.

Furthermore, Ralf Ragnick’s depleted squad can be considered an additional advantage for Chelsea. Thankfully, for Tuchel’s side, the likes of Toni Rudiger and Reece James will be back to establish a more cohesive movement in the Blues’ defense. Furthermore, the attacking trio formed by Mount, Havertz, and Werner should also be starting in this fixture, despite a somewhat ineffective display against West Ham on Sunday. However, the trio is still the team’s best shot at quick counter-attacking reactions and forwards coming deep into midfield to build up plays.

Moreover, this is Chelsea’s big chance of winning at Old Trafford after a significant time. Besides making that statement, there is still the chance of opening an eight-point gap to Arsenal, further solidifying the third spot on the table. There is just enough motivation for the players – it only depends on the appropriate lineup from Tuchel. Thus, my prediction is Manchester United 0 – 2 Chelsea.

Come on, you Blues!

Prediction: Manchester United 0-2 Chelsea

Chelsea take on Manchester United in a domestic campaign with little left to play for but pride and European qualification. It has been a disappointing season for both sides and each squad will likely need regeneration over the summer months, with high profile exits likely for both sides.

Romelu Lukaku is likely to find himself back on the bench for the visit of his former club, with Timo Werner and Kai Havertz favoured to start alongside Mason Mount.

Ronaldo is likely to feature for United, but Pogba won’t, it remains to be seen if Harry Maguire will receive a recall. I’m expecting both teams to score but Chelsea to come away with a win, with a goal from Christian Pulisic, as a sub if he doesn’t start. I’m going for 2-1 Chelsea!

Prediction: Manchester United 1-2 Chelsea

Harrison Burridge (@hburridge2)

Two stalwarts of the English game clash on Thursday evening at Old Trafford but do so in the shadow of their superior rivals, Manchester City and Liverpool. Manchester United haven’t won a league title since 2012-13 whilst for Chelsea not since 2016-17.

The current club world champions, Chelsea, come into this game on the back of an edgy and narrow 1-0 win over London rivals West Ham. A game that helped to ease the worries over the club’s home form and calm down the fan’s concerns about dropping out of the top four. One that also reminded everyone of the potential effect Christian Pulisic could have on the Blues.

Whereas for Manchester United the recent past has been bleak. Two wins in 10 including back to back losses in the last week. Coupled with that they are experiencing an injury crisis with only 14 senior players available for this game according to German manager Ralf Rangnick.

His compatriot Thomas Tuchel has experienced a difficult few months with dips in form, an ownership change and individual errors coming to the fore again. However, he and his players can be buoyed by their efforts in the Bernabeu and take that with them in bringing an end to their winless run at Old Trafford in the league against a depleted and out of sorts United.

Prediction: Manchester United 1-2 Chelsea
