Chelsea vs Wolves: Premier League Score Predictions

Introduction

After a rare and much needed week off, Chelsea take on Wolves at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. This will be the first time in a couple of months that Chelsea will go into a match without being surrounded in a cloud of uncertainty. Todd Boehly is set to buy the club and as a result, the atmosphere could be a far more optimistic one compared to the past few home games.

On a purely footballing level, Chelsea should feel good about this match. Many of the problems they’ve faced in recent times come down to fatigue, so a week off should have done the players good. Furthermore, Chelsea have not lost to Wolves at home since their return to the Premier League in 2018, although goalscoring has been difficult.

It’s a largely unchanged situation for the Blues in terms of selection information, although there are a couple of new absentees. Jorginho, Kante, Chilwell and Hudson-Odoi are all injured, although the latter is close to returning. Christensen should be available again after missing the last couple of games.

For Wolves, they will be without Podence, Semedo and Kilman through various injury issues. A big blow as well will be the absence of manager Bruno Lage, who tested positive for COVID yesterday.

Top four qualification is very much in Chelsea’s hands and at this point, it would take some spectacularly bad form to throw it away. Still, Tuchel will want to avoid a repeat of last season where things went to the final day and to that end, it’s important to win this match and get top four wrapped up early.

Ahead of the match, some of the writers at The Chelsea Social have shared their predictions:

Can Chelsea hunt down Wolves for the win?

Facing Wolverhampton Wanderers after a week of digesting a draw against Man United and a loss to Frank Lampard’s Toffees feels discouraging. While there should be enough quality in the team to get the three points at home, Wolves’ current form might work as motivation for them to extend Chelsea’s vulnerability at home. For that reason, it might be time for some changes in the team’s setup.

Considering the last matches’ results and the frontline’s ineffectiveness, freshening up the attacking trio should provide better outcomes for the Blues. Reintroducing the likes of Pulisic or Ziyech could create a more fluid playing system and they could influence the game with their pace and progressive passes. Plus, with the return of Mateo Kovacic, the team is likely to count on more attacking pressure and attempts to penetrate space from the get-go.

Chelsea cannot fail to capitalize on the visitors’ poor form and if we don’t get a result today, there is a chance we enter a top-four scrap. Hopefully, a week of rest has contributed to the team and staff’s energy and thus, my prediction is a 2-1 win for Chelsea..

Come on, you Blues!

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

We’ve been struggling recently and with the loss to Everton away, it certainly piles on the pressure for us to go and get 3rd place secured. The game against Everton was really typical of Chelsea over the years as we capitulated once the pressure really fell on us to produce. You knew what the Toffees were going to do – be up in your faces, wanting to get the crowd on their side and winning most duels. But we didn’t really match their intensity and it is the same story of what we’ve seen many times now where we just crumble.

Wolves will pose a different threat to Everton, they’re a solid team from defence to attack and they have a number of key players they can call on to produce in moments. Our home form over the season has been quite poor but considering that we’ll have had almost a week off, I certainly expect to see a reaction.

James should and probably will start and I think Ziyech should but only if he can play out wide on the right. I think he’s one of those players who has certainly been hard done by in recent months. This will be another tough game but surely we react and win after the last two disappointing games.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

After weeks of uncertainty, fans, players and coaches alike were presented with some clarity in the early hours of Saturday morning as it was announced the Todd Boehly led bid had agreed terms to become Chelsea’s new owners subject to passing the necessary approvals.

This will come as a welcome relief and remove some of the stress around the footballing activities at the club and allow them to head into the Wolves game in a much better state of mind especially with the small matter of the FA Cup final against Liverpool in seven days time.

The return of Callum Hudson-Odoi is another boost to a side that has been lacking that spark in attack with laboured performances against Manchester United and Everton. Although, he won’t feature against Wolves. However, Mateo Kovacic will play with N’golo Kante and Jorginho sidelined and he will provide Thomas Tuchel with a dynamic option going forward and backwards.

Wolves themselves have lost their last three games and seen their ambitions of European football drift away but a win against Chelsea will go a long way to them reeling that ambition back in. They will have to do so without manager Bruno Lage on the sidelines after he tested positive for Covid-19 and regular defenders Nelson Semedo and Max Kilman.

The Stamford Bridge crowd that has been subdued in recent weeks will be buoyed by the overnight news and as the 2021/22 season nears to a close they will be desperate for Chelsea to get back to winning ways and they should do just that against an out of sorts Wolves.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Wolves
